Working for Decent Affordable Housing for
All...

What is the Tenants' Union of Northern Humboldt?
We are a group of tenants that seek to create a climate
where decent, affordable housing for all outweighs short-term
economic gain for a few.
We seek to inform, educate, and support other tenants to
become aware of our rights and to undertake what is needed to
ensure these rights.
We seek to unite tenants as a common force and to make our
voices heard.
What we can do:
We
can help explain your rights*
We
can help you put pressure on your landlord
We
can help you organize with other tenants in your building, complex
or other tenants who have the same landlord or rental agency
(and maybe are having the same problems.)
We
can help explain the small claims court or other government agency
processes*
We
can work together to change local and county laws.
*We are not lawyers. We are a group of renters.
Know Your Rights!
You have a right to timely Repairs.
The California Supreme Court has ruled
that tenants have a right to a habitable dwelling. The landlord
is legally responsible for repairing conditions that seriously
affect the home,s habitability. This means your landlord must
fix or replace broken stoves, pipes, unsafe stairwells and other
hazards in a reasonable time, which in many cases is defined
as days.
You have a right to Privacy.
Landlords must give at least 24 hours notice of intent to
enter rental unit at a reasonable time. Consider becoming a member
of the North Humboldt County Tenants Association!
Many of the problems we face are too big for one individual
to tackle alone. It's easy for a landlord to city official to
ignore one phone call or to throw away one letter of complaint.
But there is no way that landlords or city officials can ignore
30 united tenants standing in the office or at their front door
demanding justice. By working together on common goals, we can
change the housing situation in Humboldt County.
